USP Lompoc Fact Sheet

The United States Penitentiary, Lompoc (pronounced "Lom-Poke") is on the site of the former military base, Camp Cooke, 2 miles west of Lompoc, California, and about 45 miles west of Santa Barbara. It was nicknamed the "New Rock" to reflect its role in replacing the original "Rock" (Alcatraz Island, in the San Francisco Bay). It houses approximately 1100 medium-security residents, and is one of four federal detention facilities in the Lompoc complex. In 2004, maximum-security residents were transferred to other facilities, and medium-level residents were transferred in.
