Letter from the Rector (July 18)

Dear Brothers in Christ,

How are you? It has been a while since my last email to you. I hope all is well with you and your families since we last talked.

The theme I have chosen for Kairos #28 is Matt. 16:24, "Whoever wishes to follow me, must deny himself." I have chosen this scripture because in order to serve the Lord in this capacity, we need to sacrifice, surrender ourselves, our agendas, and our
control in order to minister His love and word to our Brothers. At the same time, it calls out to the incarcerated candidates that we invite to K-28, to surrender their lives, lifestyles, and control, to follow Him as he leads them to a new way of Life, Hope, and Love.

If you have not already signed up for the team but are considering joining us to work the K-28 weekend, I ask that you please fill out a team application as soon as possible. Our first team meeting is coming up in about 1 month. It would help me considerably to know
how many members we are having and the amount of clergy so I will be able to assign the various talks. I would also like to know who is attending so if you would like to carpool up to the meetings, we might have someone willing to share the ride.

In order to keep things running smoothly, we need to get our information prepared early so it is available for the prison staff. This includes the NCIC forms for ourselves and also for our spouses, family, and or friends we are inviting to the closing ceremony. Although it says on the web site to fill out the NCIC form and turn in 4 weeks prior to the prison visit, we have been asked to have this information turned in much earlier. So go ahead and invite people now to attend the closing ceremony so they can fill out the NCIC forms right away. It is ok to fill out a form now, even if later they decide that they are not able to attend. Bring the NCIC forms to me at the team meeting (you can also fax them to me at (323) 257-1485.)

Sleeping arrangements for the weekend are still in progress. We are told that St. Mary's has again graciously offered their facility for
overnighters during the weekend. They do not have a shower, but in the past, team members that have rented a motel have offered their showers to those without. Hotels are cheaper if you reserve in advance. I find it cheaper to split the cost of the room with another person. Again, thank you for your attention and consideration. If you have questions about any part of this email, feel free to email me or call me at (310) 569-5900.

In Christ's Love,

Rector Karios #28

Kairos 28 is In the Works! (June 12 email)

Greetings Kairos Brothers!

Let me start off by introducing myself as the Rector for the upcoming Kairos #28. My name is David Nieto and it is my pleasure to serve you for the upcoming Kairos weekend in October. Some of you I have had the privilege of working with in the past, and those of you that I have not met, I am looking forward to working with in the future. We have been very blessed to hear the good news of being able to host another Kairos weekend this year. As some of you know, we were told this would not happen again this year, but God has been gracious enough to work within the powers that be to allow us another weekend in October. I have been in contact with previous leaders of our Kairos community and I have come up with a schedule of dates for the team meetings. They are as shown above. As of yet, the locations of these meetings are still to be confirmed. I will let you know as soon as I find out.

We have the blessing of adequate time to fully prepare for team formation. I learned at Advanced Kairos Training that there is much in the way of community growth and spiritual exercises that we need to go through as a team to fully prepare for this ministry. For Kairos #28, I am glad to be able to give everyone an early heads up to prepare, clear calendars, enjoy most of your summer, and commit to attending all the meetings. I think we must ask ourselves, "What is my role in K #28"? Is God counting on me to further His Kingdom within this darkest of environments? Do the men of Lompoc USP need me? Please pray for God to let you know His will for you at K #28. I am looking forward to a great team and to being your servant leader. I will be personally contacting you all within the next week or so. God's Blessings on you.

In Christ's love,

Rector Karios #28
