It has come to our attention that the next Kairos weekend, scheduled for Labor Day, September 1-4, conflicts with a previously planned family camp for our friends at Christ the King Church. [However,] the only weekend that [the prison chaplaincy] could support was Labor Day weekend. Understandably, this schedule conflict may put some of our active team members from Christ the King in a difficult position of having to choose between spending time with their church family or participating in Kairos 24. I think we all acknowledge that the formation of strong church communities is vital to our Christian walk and therefore want to encourage our brothers from Christ the King to participate in the church camp if that is their desire. There should be no stress about missing a Kairos weekend. In some ways it may be refreshing to take a break from Kairos and then come back with a renewed passion for this awesome ministry.
With the understanding that many of our brothers from Christ the
King will be taking this Kairos off, I now need to send an appeal to every other
member of the Kairos community that receives this e-mail. We need to formulate
a team of 25 or more to effectively conduct Kairos 24. Every once in a while
we get an overt "calling" to join God in His work and now is one of those times.
Kairos is going down this Labor Day weekend and the Lord is recruiting disciples
to be His hands and feet inside the prison in Lompoc. We are in great need of
your service and I humbly ask you to search your hearts to see if you feel this
calling is directed at you personally. There are very few guarantees in life,
but being blessed by the presence of the Holy Spirit during a Kairos weekend
is an absolute given. Ask Ben Fisher who has already committed to working his
24th Kairos weekend at USP Lompoc. If you are so inclined please send an e-mail
to
and/or [visit this] website, www.kairoslompoc.org,
Brothers,
We received an e-mail today from Chaplain Jamaal which stated that the Kairos
24 weekend is on. We had been negotiating with the Chaplain staff for an October
date which is part of our normal yearly schedule. The prison, however, was not
able to accommodate this date and proposed Labor Day weekend, September 1-4,
as the only acceptable alternative.
This date change leaves us very little time for the planning process and team
formation. Summer is a busy time for most of us and I wanted to give you as
much advance notice as possible so those of you that are planning to work the
weekend can secure your calendars. As of now, the dates for the team meetings
are as follows:
Team Meeting #1 - July 22
Team Meeting #2 - July 29
Team Meeting #3 - August 12 (combined with a monthly reunion day)
Team Meeting #4 - August 26
The specific times and locations for the team meetings will be provided in a
future e-mail so keep your eyes peeled.
This is going to be an entirely new Kairos experience for many reasons. First,
this will be our first weekend using the new EZRA software package which conforms
to the new "Blue Book" (the "Purple Book" is kaput). This
new book defines a whole new team meeting structure and content and the weekend
itself is also changed with different daily sequences and talk changes. I hope
that the changes will cause the team formation process to be refreshing to the
veterans that have worked many weekends over the years and who may be overly
accustomed to the team meeting format. The bottom line is that almost everything
is new and this alone should spark new energy and enthusiasm for our team.
With the short planning time available to us, and the fact that we are being
asked to give up Labor Day weekend to make this Kairos work, we find ourselves
in great need of support from the Kairos community. First, we need team. We
need our loyal veterans to come out of the woodwork to ensure we have an adequate
team size. Next, and highly important, is we desperately need clergy for the
weekend. I ask that each of you do what you can to recruit your spiritual leader
to be a blessing to Kairos 24. Also, due to the short
planning period available to us, I may be calling on some of you personally
to help with all of the things that need to be done in preparation for both
team meetings and the weekend itself.
In closing, I wish to thank those brothers that have already stepped forward
to indicate their support for K24. Many of you have been e-mailing me asking
for confirmation of dates and other particulars, and I have not always been
prompt in providing direct answers. This was due to the fact that we were not
getting a firm commitment out of FCC Lompoc and, until today, I really couldn't
offer anything concrete. Now we are "on" and our team formation can
truly begin. The theme for the K24 weekend will be "Hosanna! Blessed is
he who comes in the name of the Lord!", which comes from the Gospel of
Mark 11:9.
Just when it looked like the weekend was in jeopardy, God has given us this
opportunity to join Him in His work. Come and be blessed.
Yours in Christ,
, Rector, Kairos #24
